Taling Chan; Bangkok floating market

Taling Chan is a small floating market found on the Western outskirts of Bangkok (Bangkok Noi) across the Pinklao bridge. Vendors on their boats sell vegetables, fruits and other ready to eat food. The food you buy from the boats you can consume right there on the floating restaurants.

It was really pleasant spending the afternoon at the floating market, you just forget the traffic and smog in the center of the city for a while. We had some food and drinks while listening to the Thai music and dancing.

You can also visit the area around the market by long tail boat.
We got there by taxi and and by the way you can also catch a bus from the center of Bangkok bus no.79. Next time I go I will take the Air conditioned bus there.

Here are some pictures.

Medical tourism

Every year more and more people travel to South East Asia i.e. Thailand, Malaysia and India where they save more than 60% off some of the surgical procedures. Not only the costs but also they get high quality treatments and no waiting time. Travelling costs to these countries is cheap and accommodation too.

I lived in Thailand again between 2003-2005 and I had the opportunities to see for myself this growing phenomena. Pediatrics department which I have used many times not only for me but also for some visiting families can never be found anywhere else. So when I went away from Thailand sometime even when my son had a cold I would dream Bangkok. But, now I'm back.
One of the biggest hospitals receiving this mass medical tourism is Bumrungrad hospital which serves over a million patients annually and among these over 400,000 are internationals (expatriates and visitors from 190 countries)

If you are travelling to Thailand even for a holiday and need to see a doctor you know where to go.

Budget car hire in thailand

You might be planning a trip to Thailand and wondering what options to take while moving around. Moving around in Thailand is easy even without having to drive yourself, taxis, trains, flights to different towns and highland. You will have a wide range to choose from and usually reliable.
But, if you really must drive yourself then it can be also an interesting way to see the places, this will give you an opportunity to stop whenever you want and as long as you want.
In Thailand you drive on the left hand side with speed limits of 60 kilometers per hour in towns and 90-110 out of towns. The roads are highly mantained and there are highways between major towns.

Road signs are both English and
Thai. While driving beware of motorbikes that can spring up from anywhere especially in towns! Drive safely and you will find driving on Thai roads interesting and enjoyable.

Here are some links to help you out.

Kings 80th Birthday

Yesterday, Thailand marked 80th birthday of the King. It was a very colourful event especially in Bangkok where everyone turned up dressed in yellow.
My son and I looked forward to the evening event that was planned to mark this big day. In the afternoon we started off by going to the movies to watch the golden compass.

Later we took a taxi to the area around Democracy monument about democracy monument: was started in 1939 to commemorate the 1932 revolution that ended the absolute monarchy and introduced Siam's first constitution. It is located between Grand Palace and Dusit Palace. This monument was designed by an Italian immigrant. The location of this monument is halfway between Sanam Luang and the Golden Mount. From Khaosan it is a walk away.

The area was flowing with visitors, Thais coming from all over to wish the King a happy birthday. We really enjoyed this day's events. The peak was when the King passed through here to go to his Palace and waving to the people, we only managed to see from the wide TV that was available at the square as there were too many people. It was an experience.
It was crowned with wonderful fireworks from the near Sanam Luang grounds. Here are some of the pictures with more to follow.

Romantic Sunset Over the nile

Our greatest travel adventure that took us to Cairo:
During our August trip trip to Cairo we enjoyed a romantic dinner on a Nile Cruise Boat, also because it was our 6th wedding anniversary. Our son enjoyed every bit of this travel and on this particular evening he had a taste of belly dance.
if you are going to Cairo even for few days there are few places you should not miss.
1)Great pyramids and the sphinx
2)Dinner on the boat over Nile river
3)Saqqara:location of the first Egyptian pyramid
Others places we visited and liked was the Citadel and Egyptian Antiquities Museum

I hope you will enjoy your trip to Cairo. We planned all our trip so we spent very little. Budget travelling saving your pocket
Cairo I wish I can come back

Salzburg 'creche' for Xmas-weary men

For the second year in a row, a 'creche' will be set up in the town centre where women can leave their partners for a few hours so that they can hunt down all those last-minute presents, without a bored and whingeing spouse.

In a large white tent set up on Salzburg's central Herbert-von-Karajan square, the men will be able to play computer games, leaf through newspapers or magazines such as Playboy, or simply have a drink at the bar with co-suffering "shopping widowers".

Between December 13-23, women can "surrender" their partners at the tent's entrance free of charge between 4:00 pm-10:00 pm.

Kenya has it all and golf is no exception!

Kenya's best kept secrets is the numerous golf courses. Enjoy a safari, beach and golf all in one visit. One of the most appealing features of golfing in Kenya is the variety. From the beach clubs set among palms and casuarinas with stunning views of the sapphire Indian Ocean, to those dominated by the perennial snowcap of Mount Kenya there is a medley of courses each vying for priority as the most attractive for location and interest. One is even built on the slopes of an extinct volcano!

Kenya has 40 golf courses of which 12 are 18-hole, 10 of which are used for championship events. 6 are within a 20 mile radius of Nairobi - Kenya's bustling capital. The oldest 18 hole course is Royal Nairobi Golf Club founded in 1906, the latest is the David Jones design pay and play 9 holes golf course Golf Park within the Nairobi race course.

Desert walk in search of the past?

I'm still taking you back to my recent trip to Egypt. Under the desert sun and my 4 year old never said I'm tired Mom. Reason? Because he was in search of Cleopatra! Strange but true. We prepared him a little before going there.
The miracle of a wonderful trip (vacation) in Egypt was from Scooby Doo! He had watched several times and he had felt himself in the shoes of Velma. It worked, his curiosity was high throughout the vacation.

The nice thing is thinking back when I grew up in the slopes of Mt. Kenya who could tell 1 day I will be sitting here infront of my computer sharing with you all these travels that we have done.
A vacation in Egypt is something you should not miss if you have the possibility. We stayed in the island

Places to see
Old (Coptic) Cairo

The Citadel of Cairo

Egyptian Museum

Cairo Tower - enjoy a panoramic view

Pyramids, Sphinx, Saqqara

To stay I advice you to stay in a more quit Zamalek area.Zamalek is an island in the nile between downtown Cairo and Giza.
If you want more information on this just email me and will be happy to email back if you are a budget travellor.

Lunch served Dear

Another one from Khaosan road. Lunch is served! Khaosan road and not only you have the opportunity of not only dining in a five star hotel but you have also five star restaurants that spring up like mushrooms in every pavement, angle of Bangkok.
My friends from Italy were curious to try food from the streets and when they did they never stopped eating at this same sidewalk restaurant for the few days they were here. Makes the town look like a whole big restaurant with smoke all over. Sometimes you just keep coughing and sneezing because of the smoke decorated with pepper. You know thai food is spicy.
I think I like the idea of these small restaurants as many many of Bangkok people make a living with this, and hence everyone has a small something. If such small businesses were allowed in Nairobi then there would be less crime in the city.

Travel cheaply

Despite overcrowding and chaos Bangkok is one of Asias most exciting cities to visit.
Temples, floating market, weekend market and so many other attractions that will just leave you wanting to come back.
November to February is great time to visit as it is not burning hot. Currently the weather is good, rainy and cool especially the night.

It's easy to travel around, you can save a lot by organising your trips around the country from here, this could be done by contacting the local agencies and or friends who are living here to make such arrangements for you depending on what you want to see around and you pay for the trip on your arrival.

If you are travelling to Bangkok and need some cheap bargains than what you can get from your home country, then take my word.. book internal travelling locally.
If you need help, feel free to contact me and I can obtain for you advice even prices from a local agency and you can compare. A wise budget tourist/traveller will always compare alternatives and pick the best quality-price.
Let me hear from you.

Bangkok property boom

Bangkok High rise property boom.
It is evident that there is a high boom of condominiums in the central area of Bangkok. Mostly those located along the sky train or subway routes. Why is this? Because they of course save on travelling costs and time.
Showrooms everywhere trying to attract buyers. Prices are high and continue to grow especially for those properties that are located in central area.

From the slopes to the slopes! .... page 2

from the slopes to the slopes page:2

Since that night Twisty's homework become more and more enjoyable. As she progressed with her school her mother started getting worried what will happen with her secondary education as it required huge savings. And Twisty had brothers and sisters who were at school themselves. But, her mother always brushed aside the idea of Twisty not joining high school with a tear.

It had rained heavily that night, as Twisty walked to school she was shivering of cold, but what could she do? They could not afford to buy her a pair of shoes or a jacket to protect her from the cold. But Twisty always knew down in her heart that one day sun will shine on her family. She was cold when she got to school, among the first pupils to get to school. It was deserted no singing, no yelling and running around she was always used to. This, is when she realised that the judgement day had come. The students desks were arranged each far away from the other and slowly the supervisors started arriving in the school "It was the national exams day" this was going to tell the world (village) all the truth of what she had been doing in school for eight years. Twisty was confident when she got the first paper which was English composition. She had three titles to choose from and write a story. The three days passed by fast. Nobody in the class discussed the papers instead they just hoped that Christmas that was around the corner brought them some happiness and hope for joining new schools across the country.

In my village Christmas never mean't writing letters to father Christmas and ask for this and that, video game,or whatever. It was time to say a silent prayer and wish that the results were good and that your parents are able to pay for your education in high school for the following 4 years.
Twisty's best friend came around on Sunday afternoon, they had a cup of tea which is normal to every visitor in the slopes you are welcomed with a cup of hot tea. They sat under the Avocado tree that her father had planted for her, and she always sat there when she felt sad and lonely. She would look at tonnes of Avocado fruits hanging up above her head and wish she could turn them all into money and pay school fees for herself and the others in the family. This was a special afternoon because at Four in the afternoon the radio announced the results were out and usually it would take around two days to get them. A hen passed by and the radio went off, because it was a very old radio my father always said that his radio was old that even the hen's footsteps would put it off. Twisty's smaller brother enjoyed moments like this when he would open the radio, and put it back together.

Let me offer you a drink from the slopes and then we continue later with Twisty's story.
Boiled water, add tea and squeeze lemon juice and add sugar as you like. Since in the slopes we never had fridges to make ice, you can either choose to add some ice or drink it hot! If you are returning on a journey from Kenya remember to take home some real ground coffee from there and do not forget to carry with you KETEPA TEA- True taste of Kenya. Take my word you will keep asking someone from there to send some.

From the slopes to the slopes!...page 1

Twisty a girl from the slopes, never would imagine what life had in store for her. She was always sad when her Dad came home drunk and beat up her mother, threw the food out of the window and swore to kill them.

Every time her Dad went drinking they would have dinner early so when her Dad came back they had full stomachs. It was easy to know when he was back as he sang loudly on his way back home. All neighbours could tell that it was Twisty's father coming back home very drank. Twisty family did not have even enough money to buy her school books leave alone a good pair of shoes. And anyway during this period only teachers children could afford to wear a pair of shoes. Every child in Twisty's wanted to be friends with the only girl who happened to be the daughter of the class teacher.

Twisty came to school with very torn green tunic and a pink blouse. A common way of describing these torn dresses in school was "a dress with windows all over". Teachers in the school were very sad to see Twisty like this as she was obidient, hard working and bright kid. So teachers in the school would sometime raise money and have Twisty get a new tunic.

After school Twisty rushed home from school to help her mother with house work but remembering to do her homework before sunset as in the night she could only have light from the fire they used for cooking. But, slowly her mother realised how difficult it was for Twisty to finish all her work before dark, so she went over to her neighbours and asked for an empty cocoa tin which with help of a nail she made a small hole in the middle and with a small piece of an old blanket plus kerosene this turned to be the greatest technology for the family, now Twisty could do her homework during the evening after dinner.

Come back tomorrow to follow Twisty's story

Market Day

For the first time I went to the farmers Market today. I did not take a picture at the market.

A big market with a lot of food kiosks. Was really amazed that I had not discovered the market before during my last stay here. But there is always time for everything.

Everything looked soooo fresh I just wanted to buy and buy. Bought lots of vegetables and also fish.
The storm came and in few minutes that I was there rained cats and dogs, I got all my clothes wet but never mind, this is not a problem. During my growing up on the slopes of Mt Kenya, we never had umbrellas and life never stopped.

During the rainny season sometimes it was the peak of harvesting coffee and we had to go on, we worked under the rains to save the coffee only the shameful part is that the pay was too bad even after working under the rains could not be enough to pay school fees. In the slopes we have open air markets (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) were Market days. We sold the vegetables and other products from the gardens mostly cereals.

So today I did not rush under the rains it was like bringing my memories from the slopes back.
Thats all for today, check the recipes blog for what I will prepare with all these vegetables and fruit that I bought!
See you there, I hope you join me tomorrow on my journey to the slopes.

The girl from the slopes

To see where my village lies click here This is the best google maps could give us, have patience and soon maybe we will get better pictures from here. Its elevation is 5199m. My home is on around 1800m. So every time we go to some new place and try to check the height, nothing gets to my village height.

So, you might ask how did a girl from here get to Bangkok or Italy in the first place. I will tell you about that in the near future.

But today after 1 month in Bangkok, I visited my Kenyan embassy here. I felt like being back home. It was nice to see other Kenyans. Thanks to the Kenyan embassy staff you made me feel at home.
Its time to close and we catch up tomorrow when I will start a long post on how I left the slopes and why.

Remember the girl from the slopes has other blogs that you might like especially if you are looking for a recipe I have got wonderful recipes for you to try, anyway the girl from the slopes can now cook why not you. Over here you find my recipes

And if you are looking for a small gift for friends and family then the girl from the slopes has come up with this

Ehi! Going to watch Harry Potter tonight! Who knows if all those people I know in the village knows what is Harry Potter?

Greetings from the slopes girl, leave a comment if you like reading my posts

Thailand: Medical Tourism

Yesterday we had family Visit to the Dentist. Very professional and of course you pay less than what you would pay elsewhere lets say Italy.

Thailand has high class hospitals and many people come here for treatment. The service is excellent and of course will save your waiting time that sometimes people have to face in the west.

Coming back to yesterday, we had a general check up. And the doctor said come back in 1 years time....

When I grew up in the slopes of Mt. Kenya, I remember we did not have tooth brushes and paste. So one will ask how did you do then? Here is the answer there are trees that we took a piece of the younger part of the branch and chew them, then use as brush. You should have seen all the children on our way to school brushing. Now things have changed and everyone want a brush and tooth paste. My first tooth brush and tooth paste was when I went to high school as it was compulsory.

We also had a secret whitener for our teeth? You want to know what it was? Aha, don't laugh at me or say disgusting because this is the other side of life.. we used charcoal from our Mommas wooden stoves. I wish I had a photo for those times to share with you, unfortunately we only heard of photos.

The picture in the post is an idea for your next gift, to Mom and friends.
Click here to see what it is, it is not from Meru the slopes of Mt. Kenya it is something I got here!

Moving around in Bangkok

One may wonder "how do I move around in such a big city?" The answer is moving around in Bangkok is easy as there are all means of ways to move around. From Underground train, elevated train, Taxi, boats, tuk tuks and motocycles. Forgot to mention Buses, from airconditioned ones to non.

Remember to grab a Bangkok Map from anywhere especially at the tourist office to elevated train stations.

The simple truth is that traffic in Bangkok is huge, you can find yourself sitting in the bus or taxi for hours, which in the slopes of Mt. Kenya where I was born you would walk like nothing. But since Im not there, I have to find a way to move, so if your routes are covered by the sky train, you had better go for it which means 0 time in the traffic.

Taxis are cheap, it is not like in the west where you sit in a taxi and your heart jumps every time the meter ticks. My recent taxi experience is on our way to the airport last August from Bologna - Bologna airport was something like 5 kilometers and I don't want to talk about the rate here as I will scare you. Here, taxi meter starts at 35 baht (baht is the local currency)

I have seen many people here prefer the motorbykes, I have no idea how much they cost but of course less than taxi. I do not have much to say about this motocycle thing only that they are able to avoid stopping in the traffic as it is easy for them to pass in small spaces possible.
Talking of motors and Me a child from the slopes of Mt. Kenya, in my village there were only 2 motocycles and they belonged to veterinarians , even the cows and sheep in the village nodded when they passed by as they could tell it was there doctor on his way home or to work. And, one of them had an accident and we all were scared about this 2 wheel gadget. Anyway everyone used to say they were dangerous. Up to date I would not have the courage to sit on them especially in a trafficky town like Bangkok. This is personal nothing to do with the way they ride for heavens sake. Feel free to ride.

You might also want to try the TUK TUK experience, they always tell you 10 baht, and the experience I had they took us to a shopping center instead of the temple we wanted to visit. But, I think they can tell the new arrivals.

I leave you to read this for today and lets see what tomorrow brings.

Eat out or In?

My first week here was full of eating out, Im a lover of good food and hope you too are. Bangkok is the only town have seen where everyone seem to eat out every day. This is because of many restaurants around 6pm you will find that almost all sidewalks becomes restaurants. The whole town becomes a whole big in and open restaurant. Its amazing.

I hope to get a few photos of this and bring over to you in the next few days. There is food everywhere, every time. So, I recommend next time you come over try not only Mac and Kfc but also these side restaurants. You can eat from fish to curry and of course lots of vegetables.

But as I said before I love cooking and I just watch neighbours come home with there rice and curry in small food bags and dinner is done.

But never mind, if you are here and you are not the spicy type of person you will enjoying wonderful food from all over the world, there are international restaurants so there is something for everyone.

Well if you are travelling to Bangkok, feel free to drop me a line and say hi.

Wednesday the 12th

Now settled and in the new apartment. My son going to school Im the one left to find how to fill my free time.

The day seemed hotter than usual, after walking for hours in search of an Internet cafè I finally came to Asok (elevated train station)and I had vowed to take the train and go to the other part of the town where I knew there were internet cafès.
But as soon as this idea came into my head, guess what, there it was infront of me. A guy who was cleaning the windows indicated it was upstairs. I was happy at least to rest a little bit after almost 2 hours walking in the heat of Bangkok.
My email boxes were exploding with incoming mails this is partly because of the volunteer work I have been doing with Nabuur.com.

I sat there reading mails for 3 hours, believe it or not I could not reply to everyone, next time. I realised that my son was about to come home from school, I took a taxi and rushed back home. Forgot to mention that it was not easy to get used to his homework. Now he is coping better and even enjoying it.

Now I have to stop and fill in 1 or 2 sudoku puzzles and then sleep.
See you tomorrow

Neighbourhood

Hi and a big hallo from Bangkok.

From Italy to Thailand was as long as it could be. Arrived in Bangkok and found it as we left 2 years ago except for many new highrise buildings.

The week that followed our arrival was busy one looking for an apartment and school for the small one.

A big hallo from Bangkok!

You might have been wondering whats happening with this girl. Here I am, our journey started on the 13 of July. From Valcea in Romania we ended home in Italy, the following morning we flew to Cairo for a week holiday, we had miles to spend and we chose to go to Cairo. A week in Cairo passed like lightening, I could have stayed more but this is where the budget took us.

Our flight back was cancelled, they put us in Rome flight instead of Milan with long waiting hours for connection flight to Bologna.

We spent another week at home enjoying the good food of Romagna, before going back to Romania for the last 10 days there.

On the 10th of August we left Rimnicu Valcea and started our long drive back to Italy. The first part of journey took us to the town of Szeged in Hungary. We slept here until the following day. Here we enjoyed the hungarian food Gulash.

On the following morning we drove the rest of the journey to our town in Italy. Austria is always lovely, I love the way they build their houses.

Our journey back was to prepare for our move to Bangkok, but do you think my nomadic life will stop there? No, 4 days after our return to Italy it was time to drive to Germany and say hallo to my Kenyan friend who is studying there, my friend and I had been friends since our high school times in Kenya 91-94 and then in University where we took the same course 1997-2001. We separeted in 2001 when my friend and I separeted for our internship after our last year as (bachelor of science agricultural education graduates) 3 months after I got married and my friend did not have the opportunity to come. So our meeting in Germany has been a happy re-union.

Where Im going next no way I can dream of having a small garden for vegetables.

cold up there!

Looks like the clouds are touching down on the earth, looks like I'm back home on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, where every morning watched Mt.Kenya and the clouds covering it, or very sunny bright mornings with the snow on the top visible. I always imagined how does snow look, feel and taste.

Now, here I am, bringing you pictures I took in last Saturday when we took a round trip in the mountains around Rm.Valcea (a province in Romania) where I have been living with my family for the last 1 year.

Now, coming back from the geography doesn't the picture look fantastic? And when everyone was sweating down here in the town, up there it was freezing cold, and because we had dressed up like we were going to the seaside we risked a cold.
Keep following the journey and discover the great photo's coming.

Have a great day!
