Kings 80th Birthday

Yesterday, Thailand marked 80th birthday of the King. It was a very colourful event especially in Bangkok where everyone turned up dressed in yellow.
My son and I looked forward to the evening event that was planned to mark this big day. In the afternoon we started off by going to the movies to watch the golden compass.

Later we took a taxi to the area around Democracy monument about democracy monument: was started in 1939 to commemorate the 1932 revolution that ended the absolute monarchy and introduced Siam's first constitution. It is located between Grand Palace and Dusit Palace. This monument was designed by an Italian immigrant. The location of this monument is halfway between Sanam Luang and the Golden Mount. From Khaosan it is a walk away.

The area was flowing with visitors, Thais coming from all over to wish the King a happy birthday. We really enjoyed this day's events. The peak was when the King passed through here to go to his Palace and waving to the people, we only managed to see from the wide TV that was available at the square as there were too many people. It was an experience.
It was crowned with wonderful fireworks from the near Sanam Luang grounds. Here are some of the pictures with more to follow.
Long Live The King
